A No Pain Labor’s Latter From Ling Qun Hu, MD

Dear Everyone,
   After two years of much preparation, the first leg of the No Pain Labor N’ Delivery medical education mission to China will be conducted at the Women’s Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, in Hangzhou, China. from June 7th to June 13th, 2008. This mission plans to establish 10 obstetric anesthesia training centers throughout China within the next 10 years, ultimately increasing labor neuraxial analgesia usage from less than 1% to 10%. This operation is all 10s to the triple power! This first trip will include a total of 15 volunteers comprising of: 5 attending anesthesiologists (Dr. Ling Qun Hu, Founder and the Director of the No Pain Labor N’ Delivery and the Chair of the Chinese American Society of Anesthesiology Medical Mission Committee; Dr. Cynthia Wong, the Medical Director of OB anesthesia in the Prentice Women’s Hospital, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medical and Chief Editor of the Anesthesia and Analgesia Obstetric Anesthesia Section; Dr. Barbara Scavone, the Secretary of Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP); Dr. John Sullivan, the Chair of the SOAP Education Committee, and Associate Chair for Education, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medical Department of Anesthesiology; and Dr. Nicole Higgins, Co-Director of the No Pain Labor N’ Delivery mission, and Instructor, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology); one attending obstetrician (Dr. William Grobman, Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Institute
for Health Care Studies, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine); along with, 4 senior anesthesia residents; 3 labor & delivery nurses; and 2 interpreters. Within the first three days of the mission, there will be a national anesthesiology conference. (Please find the conference schedule attached to this letter.) Dr. Xinmin Wu, the President of the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology and Dr. Shanglong Yao, the Chair of the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology Obstetric Anesthesia Committee and vice president of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhang University of Science and Technology will be presenting at the conference. The clinical services will start simultaneously with the conference and will provide the 24-hour coverage needed for the anticipated 150 patients during the one week. This educational mission will be conducted via the following didactic tools: lecturing, hands-on training, and with the use of clinical practice models in order to achieve maximum results. All of the team members are graciously volunteering their own vacation time and covering their own traveling expenses.
